“Stock Photography”
Making a Livelihood as a Stock Photographer
by
Tom Bean

5 February 2005 9am - 4pm

In this workshop, Tom Bean will share his unique approach to the ever-changing business of stock photography.

Tom will tell us about his 25 years shooting travel, landscape, earth science, geography, and outdoor adventure images, which have been licensed for thousands of uses by hundreds of different publishing clients worldwide.   We’ll review a typical stock photo shoot to learn about his pre-trip preparations, equipment, how he works in the field, and how he markets images after a trip.

We’ll see how Tom made his switch from seasonal park ranger to full-time photographer and broke into assignment work with the National Geographic Society, and why he now emphasizes self-directed assignments aimed at creating successful stock photos.   We’ll hear the stories of some of his all-time best sellers as well as look at recent work to see what has and has not been selling.

We’ll learn how the rise of the mega stock agencies has transformed the market for photographs and look at some new models for marketing images.   We’ll also discuss the negotiation of stock photo rights and fees.

This workshop is suitable for professional photographers who would like to broaden their market and for serious amateurs interested in licensing their images for publication.
